Sam hurt as Swifts bomb out
SWIFTS netball superstar Sam Wallace has limped from the court in devastating scenes at Ken Rosewall Arena, with fears the shooter suffered a serious knee injury against the Giants.
Wallace’s NSW teammates were left “in tears” as she lay injured on the court in the hands of Swifts medical staff early in the final quarter.
The injury ended the Swifts’ fightback in the Super Netball grand final rematch in Sydney as young Kelly Singleton was brought on to partner Helen Housby in attack.
“That would be absolute devastation to this NSW Swifts side if it’s a serious injury,” Fox Netball’s Cath Cox said. “Sammy Wallace not looking good at all.”
The injury could not only sideline Wallace for the 2022 Super Netball season, but the Commonwealth Games in July.
Wallace is Trinidad & Tobago’s star shooter and holds the nation’s hopes heading into Birmingham later this year.
The injury overshadowed an incredible 57-55 victory by the Giants in the NSW derby.
Young Giant Sophie Dwyer stamped her authority on the match in a brilliant display in front of Australian Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich and Australian selector Anne Sergeant, forcing last year’s grand final MVP Maddy Turner to the bench.
Dwyer was left home alone under the post on multiple occasions in the second term, and made the Swifts pay – sinking 16/17 at 97 per cent for the first half.
The young goal attack added two super shots, including one after the halftime siren, to push the Giants out to a 32-29 lead.
She finished with 28 goals, at 93 per cent from inside the supershot zone.
Adelaide beat Collingwood 54-50 in their clash.
