MYRTLE EYES EASTER PRIZE

- GREG ALDAM

EASTER Sunday will provide some exciting and outstanding racing at Winnellie Park, with the major highlights being the running of the $10,500 Easter Cup final over 537m and also the Golden Muzzle over 383m.

Outside of the carnival, the Easter Cup is the premier distance race on the Winnellie Park racing calendar and this race is invariably a good form guide for the local greyhounds who go on to contest the Group 3 Darwin Cup in late July.

While it has brought together an impressive field, one greyhound looks to have the credentials and will be very hard to beat, and that is Myrtle Monelli from the Steele Bolton kennel.

The daughter of Hecton Bale has drawn perfectly in box one, which should keep her clear of any early trouble.

The likes of her kennel mate in Porsche Monelli, the Andrew Laskertrained Mighty Marshall and Gippsland Storms, from the Graeme Ferns kennel, can keep her honest all the same, too.

One of the excellent promotional races is the Golden Muzzle, and this is for the younger greyhounds who have come up as maiden performers within the last 12 months to continue or start their racing careers at Winnellie Park.

This race has plenty of depth to it, with the brother-and-sister combination of Coco Sun and Aunt Bee, with Ron Phillips, and Barney Sun, who is under the guidance of Rob Brown, being leading contenders over the 383m journey.

The start to this race, which is on a bend, can play a major role, so early luck is required, which also brings Eight Gifts, with Phillips, and Redeeming Eight, from the Adam Poulter kennel, into the race.

Other notable chances across the program include Gudgeon Pin in race one for Harry Brown, while Victory Arrow is looking to go back-to-back in race two for Bolton and box one will suit her.

To finish the program, Lovely Xena has drawn the inside box for Phillips, making her hard to beat.

First race is set down for 6.56pm with the gates open from 5.30pm and it has been confirmed the Easter bunny will be making an appearance on track for the kids.
