EXTREMELY STRONG EFFORT SINKS FIREBURN’S HOP ES

-

SHE’S Extreme sank the Triple Crown hopes of Fireburn in a stirring struggle at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Fireburn needed the Group 1 $500,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) to complete the coveted juvenile series clean sweep but try as she might, she couldn’t run down early leader She’s Extreme.

Tommy Berry rode a tactically brilliant race in front on She’s Extreme, turning the Champagne Stakes into a sprint home as the two star fillies cleared out from their chasing rivals.

But unlike the Golden Slipper and ATC Sires Produce Stakes when Fireburn gave away big starts and reeled in her rivals, she couldn’t run down She’s Extreme.

Anthony Cummings, trainer of She’s Extreme, had been confident his filly could turn the tables on her arch rival after finishing second in the Sires.

“She’s Extreme hasn’t missed a beat, improving all the way,’’ he said. “She hadn’t had that much work on the way through.

“It was as simple as working her to her pedigree.”

She’s Extreme ($5) led throughout and held off a surging Fireburn ($1.55 favourite) to win by a long neck, with more than five lengths to Williamsburg ($8.50).
