Police call for help in fatal hit and run

NORTHERN Territory Police are calling for help after a fatal hit and run near Timber Creek on Friday.

About 4.30am Friday, police responded to reports that a man had been struck by a vehicle on the Victoria Highway, 40km west of Timber Creek.

A 19-year-old man was declared dead at the scene with the offending vehicle and driver unknown.

Police are calling for motorists who were travelling on the Victoria Highway between Timber Creek and Kununurra between midnight and 4am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said the exact circumstan­ces around what happened remained unknown.

“We are calling for any motorists who were travelling in the area are to contact police,” Sergeant Borton said.

“Major Crash are investigat­ing and urge the driver of the vehicle to make themselves known to police. Similarly, anyone with informatio­n which may assist with our investigat­ions can report informatio­n to police on 131 444 or anonymousl­y via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

The Territory’s road toll sits at 14, double what it was at this time last year.

Drivers are being encouraged to take care on the roads, particular­ly around public holiday weekends when there is a high volume of traffic and pedestrian­s around.
