Stabbing charges expected

- Laura Hooper

Charges are yet to be laid following the fatal stabbing of a man in Alice Springs on Thursday, leaving the town on edge and fearing an escalation in violence.

An NT Police spokesman said a man, 23, remained in custody on Saturday and was expected to be charged at a later date.

He said they did not expect any charges to be laid at the weekend, with police now able to confirm the victim was a 32year-old man.

It was revealed a paramedic helping the stabbed man spent Thursday night in hospital after being assaulted at the scene.

St John Ambulance service director Andrew Thomas said a paramedic was struck in the back of the head while “trying to save a life” on Todd St about 3pm Thursday.

The injured officer and another woman were taken to hospital with injuries but have since been discharged.

It is understood rocks were thrown at the emergency services, with police guarding the ambulance while first aid was done on the injured man.

He died on the street, near the Todd Tavern.

“(Thursday), St John NT staff dealt with a number of cases which were difficult, confronting and impactful,” Mr Thomas said.

“On top of these we unfortunately saw one of our paramedics being assaulted while performing their role in trying to save a life at an incident near the Todd Tavern in Alice Springs.

“St John NT fully supports all legal action to be taken against perpetrators of violence and aggression to any of our staff and also supports staff removing or withdrawing from locations if they are threatened or feel unsafe.”

Police arrested a 23-year-old man soon after the alleged incident and he remains in custody.
