As part of Budget 2024 the Territory government has dedicated $3m to the redevelopment of the Tracy Village Sports Precinct, which will include a permanent home ground for Hellenic Athletic Club.

Stage 1 of the plan includes the construction of dedicated football facilities at the site, and provides upgrades to the playing fields and lighting already at the precinct.

The first stage will also include a master plan to facilitate further stages of the development for the years to come. Further upgrades will include improvements for others sports such as cricket, Aussie rules, netball and basketball, that all have clubs based at the facility.

Hellenic will use $1.2m of the funding secured by Football NT to build women’s change rooms within the Tracy Village complex as part of the redevelopment plan.

The sporting precinct was originally created as a venue for workers carrying out the clean-up and rebuild following the destruction of Darwin in the wake of Cyclone Tracy.

Chief Minister Eva Lawler said the upgrade would help secure Tracy Village as a “top notch sports precinct for the Northern Suburbs”.

“This is the first stage of the redevelopment which will see Hellenic have a permanent home, while a masterplan is prepared for future development of the precinct,” she said. Sport Minister Kate Worden said that as one of Darwin’s biggest sporting clubs it was great to finally provide Hellenic AC with a permanent base.

“Hellenic AC is a proud club with 66 years of history in Darwin and around 500 players and members,” Ms Worden said.

“Sporting clubs like Hellenic provide so much to our community, much more than just a place to play sport. They bring communities together and provide a sense of belonging.”
