Gym leaps in to new future
IT’S OFFICIAL, the YMCA Caloundra gymnastics centre is under new management.
The founding staff member of the Caloundra centre, Trevor Dowdell, is back working with staff to build an optimistic future for the centre.
For two years Mr Dowdell collaborated with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Brisbane YMCA to create the gymnastics and community centre in the Caloundra Central Park Sport and Recreation Precinct.
The Brisbane YMCA leased land around the Arthur St Sports Hall from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to provide a two-building YMCA Caloundra centre of 1400sqm.
Mr Dowdell said “the YMCA is a community-based and benevolent organisation that provides hugely varied education and charitable works in South East Queensland.
“Sport and recreation are a major part of their services. The YMCA Caloundra gymnastics centre is keen to re-build a positive gymnastics experience and a valuable physical education for the Caloundra community”.
The re-build has included new store-rooms, seating areas with televisions and supplementary matting and equipment.
YMCA Caloundra’s Shirley Owen said “but more is to come with the development and employment of new staff, a major development of the community hall, extra provision of member services and out-reach to many community groups.
“Gymnastics is a critical physical education for young people, and we plan to provide better services to the greater Caloundra area,” Mr Dowdell said.
