ZONTA’S 16 Days of Activism means a sea of orange to start an important conversation.

The Zonta Club of Caloundra City is participating in 16 Days of Activism which began on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, November 25, with a race day at Corbould Park and will culminate on Human Rights Day, December 10.

The initiative is global but on our home turf the Caloundra club will set up orange signage at Kawana Stadium drawing attention to Zonta’s message: to galvanise action to end violence against women and girls in our community and around the world.

Sunshine Coast Falcon’s will offer support over the fortnight and individuals are encouraged to raise awareness surrounding the issue.

Zonta Club of Caloundra City member Jo-Anne Ashburner said the club had been working on solutions to support women in violent situations.

“We have built a couple of safe houses which opened in the last 18 months for women and children affected by DV,” she said.

The club’s work can be overwhelming according to Ms Ashburner, but the members focus on the small differences they can make instead of the enormity of the problem.

“Start with young children, talk about respectful relationships with themselves and each other.

“The 16 days cements that Zonta says no to violence against women,” said Ms Ashburner. For more info, visit www.facebook.com/zontacaloundra.
