Man ac­cused of pre­tend­ing to shoot a po­lice of­fi­cer

A MAN is ac­cused of pre­tend­ing to shoot a po­lice of­fi­cer in court who he’s al­leged to have bashed in a Christ­mas road­side at­tack.

Keven Drew De Vroom, 45, was ar­rested af­ter he al­legedly as­saulted a po­lice of­fi­cer on De­cem­ber 22 last year.

It’s al­leged when Mr De Vroom was pulled over on Maleny-Montville Rd, Bal­moral Ridge for speed­ing, he punched the of­fi­cer in the face and tried to choke him.

The 47-year-old sergeant had tried to take the keys from the ig­ni­tion when Mr De Vroom al­legedly at­tacked him.

The of­fi­cer was forced to use pep­per spray and his taser dur­ing the at­tack. He was hos­pi­talised with fa­cial in­juries. Mr De Vroom is fac­ing sev­eral charges in­clud­ing, se­ri­ous as­sault of a po­lice of­fi­cer, speed­ing, steal­ing and pro­duc­ing dan­ger­ous drugs.

He is ex­pected to con­test the as­sault charge on the ba­sis of self-de­fence.

Mr De Vroom was fur­ther charged with in­tim­i­da­tion of a wit­ness af­ter he al­legedly threat­ened vi­o­lence against the same of­fi­cer while in court.

It’s al­leged dur­ing a court pro­ceed­ing on Au­gust 27, Mr De Vroom made his hand into the shape of a gun and pre­tended to shoot it at the of­fi­cer.

Mr De Vroom faced Ma­roochy­dore Mag­is­trates Court yes­ter­day for a men­tion of his mat­ters.

The court heard a charge of fail­ing to com­ply with bail con­di­tions faced by Mr De Vroom was pre­vent­ing his other charges from be­ing com­mit­ted to the Dis­trict Court.

It’s al­leged Mr De Vroom failed to re­port to a po­lice sta­tion as re­quired, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The mat­ter will go to a hear­ing at a later date be­fore Mr De Vroom can face his other charges. Dur­ing a search of Mr De Vroom’s home af­ter the al­leged as­sault, po­lice found a hy­dro­ponic set-up grow­ing 81 mar­i­juana plants.

Mr De Vroom is not ex­pected to con­test the drug charges.

Af­ter a pre­vi­ous court ap­pear­ance, Mr De Vroom told re­porters out­side the court house he would “of course” fight the as­sault charge.

“I’d love to have a word with you guys, even­tu­ally the truth will come out,” he said.
