‘Finger gun’ allegation
Man accused of pretending to shoot a police officer
A MAN is accused of pretending to shoot a police officer in court who he’s alleged to have bashed in a Christmas roadside attack.
Keven Drew De Vroom, 45, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a police officer on December 22 last year.
It’s alleged when Mr De Vroom was pulled over on Maleny-Montville Rd, Balmoral Ridge for speeding, he punched the officer in the face and tried to choke him.
The 47-year-old sergeant had tried to take the keys from the ignition when Mr De Vroom allegedly attacked him.
The officer was forced to use pepper spray and his taser during the attack. He was hospitalised with facial injuries. Mr De Vroom is facing several charges including, serious assault of a police officer, speeding, stealing and producing dangerous drugs.
He is expected to contest the assault charge on the basis of self-defence.
Mr De Vroom was further charged with intimidation of a witness after he allegedly threatened violence against the same officer while in court.
It’s alleged during a court proceeding on August 27, Mr De Vroom made his hand into the shape of a gun and pretended to shoot it at the officer.
Mr De Vroom faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday for a mention of his matters.
The court heard a charge of failing to comply with bail conditions faced by Mr De Vroom was preventing his other charges from being committed to the District Court.
It’s alleged Mr De Vroom failed to report to a police station as required, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The matter will go to a hearing at a later date before Mr De Vroom can face his other charges. During a search of Mr De Vroom’s home after the alleged assault, police found a hydroponic set-up growing 81 marijuana plants.
Mr De Vroom is not expected to contest the drug charges.
After a previous court appearance, Mr De Vroom told reporters outside the court house he would “of course” fight the assault charge.
“I’d love to have a word with you guys, eventually the truth will come out,” he said.
