All that glitters isn’t gold but the magic stays

Sydney Arena - - SYDNEY NEWS -

All that glitters isn’t gold. At least not for this 2019 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras taking place in March for the 41th time.

The event organizers are committed to phasing out the gold glitter for environmental reasons - along with balloons and single-use plastic water bottles.

Consequently, many of the floats in this year’s parade will be glitter-free.

Sydney’s iconic festival has used tonnes of glitter from China, which ended up in the ocean.

The plan now is to make the event completely carbon neutral within five years.

Glitter is microplastic, a plastic less than five millimeters in length that causes harm to marine life that mistakes it for food. And humans ingest the microplastics via seafood.

Balloons are also a problem, with the attached strings strangling birds.

Other festivals in Australia, such as the Sydney Festival, Splendour in the Grass and the Falls Festival have already moved on discouraging the use of single-use plastics, but none have ban glitter outright.

But for those addicted to glitter there are the friendlier glitter options made from the cellulose of eucalyptus trees.
