THE Poll Dorset breed is known for rapid growth rates and early maturity, shapely carcass with ideal fat coverage and high yield of lean meat.

These characteristics are ideal for meat production and make Poll Dorset sires perfect for prime lamb production.

When used in crossbreeding Poll Dorsets produce lambs with excellent hybrid vigour; ensuring strong growth and resulting in lambs that reach marketable weights sooner. Progeny can be trade ready at 18kg to 22kg carcass weight from 12 weeks of age, resulting in reduced management costs.

Poll Dorset-sired lambs continue their growth through to heavy export lambs of 28+kg CWT, giving producers options for their business.

Poll Dorset genetics lead the way in lean meat yield, resulting in higher-value carcasses. Exhibiting ideal muscle patterns, a large loin and shapely hindquarter result in a higher proportion of quality cuts of meat.

Poll Dorsets lead the way in market-relevant sires. Breed development has resulted in a body shape that minimises birth difficulties while maintaining carcase shape. A robust constitution boosts lamb survivability in harsh conditions.

The stabilised genetic pool ensures lambs are consistent in type and quality, giving lamb producers reliable marketing options and high returns.

The tightness and density of the downs wool contributes to a quality skin. Lambs look fresher for longer, resulting in more sales before shearing. Open, wool-free faces reduce wool blindness and minimise issues with grass seeds.

Fertility is the greatest single parameter for profitability in a commercial flock. The majority of Poll Dorset rams are used as terminal sires as their high fertility, virility and functionality has enhanced their commercial acceptance.

The lamb production area of Australia covers a range of environmental conditions. The breed has stood the test of time for consistent high performance in all climates, over all maternal breeds, across market weight ranges. The large gene pool within the breed has enabled it to fulfil all market and management needs.
