Push on to topple trade barriers

Tasmanian Country - - NEWS -

FARMERS have welcomed a new plan to help reduce unjustified trade restrictions, or non-tariff barriers, which they say hurt farm exports.

Trade Minister Simon Birmingham committed to addressing non-tariff barriers and working to remove trade restrictions.

Non-tariff barriers can be “red tape” or trade rules that restrict the flow of goods and services without justification, including animal and plant health requirements not based on science and inconsistently applied packaging standards.

National Farmers’ Federation president Fiona Simson said a plan to deal with non-tariff barriers was critical.
