TEARAWAY UNFOLDED
LOSES A BIT IN TRANSLATION, BUT STILL AN ESSENTIAL PLATFORMER.
Tearaway originally released as a PlayStation Vita exclusive – a handheld receiving little-to-no ongoing support by Sony. As a result, the company is salvaging the Vita’s best titles via heavily-upgraded PS reissues, and Tearaway Unfolded is among the rst to get this treatment. (Vita title Gravity Rush is also coming to PS next year). Tearaway is Media Molecule’s attempt at the D platformer, but given the studio’s pedigree (it created LittleBigPlanet) it’s also a little unorthodox. Originally reliant on the Vita’s streamlined touch interface, Unfolded demonstrates both the advantages and shortcomings of translating to the big screen. The more creative elements, such as manipulating the gameworld, is more nicky using the PS ’s touchpad compared to the Vita’s spacious touchscreen. Meanwhile, you’ll need a PlayStation Camera to gain access to some of the more advanced creative features. As a straightforward D platformer though,
Tearaway gains more from the PS than it loses. It’s bigger and more beautiful on a television screen, its colours more vibrant and world more intricate. No matter which platform, Tearaway ought not be ignored.
