Canon EOS M3

THE ENTRY LEVEL DSLR GOT SHRUNK.

-

THE EOS M3 is third iteration of the EOS M, though the M2 was never officially available in Australia and other major markets. is upgraded model gets a bigger 24MP sensor, new processor, tilting LCD touchscreen, wireless and a pop-up ash.

Canon’s also made some changes to the layout and operation of buttons and dials to make key features a little more accessible. e body shape remains largely the same, with the two biggest improvements being that pop-up exible ash and the tilting LCD.

Photo quality is great, with excellent sharpness and colour processing and the M3 performs quite well in low light, with still very useable photos from ISO 12,800. It’s rather disappointing that the video resolution or framerate hasn’t been improved, however, considering a lot of cameras are now able to shoot 4K video. is shoots 1080p video at 30fps, which is disappointing given that the camera already lacks in other departments. For example, Canon’s lens range is very limited, with only four dedicated lenses for the entire EOS M series. An EF lens adaptor is available to use with the wide range of lenses that Canon has for their DSLRs, but the latter are o en bigger and heavier than lenses designed for mirrorless use. is probably says a lot about the direction of the Canon as a whole; it’s clearly choosing to focus its e orts for their DSLR range. However, using a large EF lens on a small EOS M body really defeats the purpose of a mirrorless camera.

All up, the M3 is targeted at current Canon DSLR users who want to have a camera that’s slightly smaller, but is compatible with their current collection of lenses.
