AND YOU THOUGHT Ceiling Cat was nosy. It’s been announced that the Sydney suburb of Manly has implemented monitoring so ware to catch people who park illegally. e council has applied Microso ’s Azure Machine Learning technology to CCTV cameras in the area to assist police and rangers with the enforcing of parking restrictions. So far, the cloud-based tech has been installed in 25 smart parking meters, 4 smart parking stations, 100 CCTV cameras and 20 wireless access points around the seaside suburb. Manly council says it intends to use the analytics data acquired by the technology to target problem areas with patrols and resources.

Manly Council’s CIO Nathan Rogers says the tech has “really only scratched the surface” of what it could do for the suburb, stating that it’s also being considered for crowd control, surf conditions and to keep the community safe. Our advice? Make sure you behave responsibly the next time you’re in the Manly area – you never know who might be watching you...
