Chinese phones can compete with the best

- [ GREGORY SMALLS ]

After having used Apple phones for a number of years, I switched to a Huawei P10 Plus and, after a positive experience with that, I grabbed a OnePlus 5 when they recently became available in Australia — and I have to say, the competition that these Chinese-made Androids offer is strong.

Plenty of the tech that the latest iPhones are showing off have been kicking around in Androids for quite some time — AMOLED displays, dual cameras, wireless charging — and while it’s fair to say that some of these features have been flawed on earlier Android devices, Apple seems just as likely to hit or miss with these developments.

While Samsung may be seen as Apple’s main opponent, companies such as OnePlus and Oppo are offering several price incentives for products with a lot of shared appeal.

Next time you find yourself drooling over the latest iPhone, give these Chinese brands a healthy glance and consider what you actually want out of your handset, as you can save some serious dosh and even end up with a more capable everyday performer. The top-tier iPhone X costs over $1,100 more than the top-tier OnePlus 5… and as far as I can see, there’s honestly not a lot between them!
