Smart cases allowed travellers to charge their phones, lock their suitcase remotely and track it via GPS, but they have one fatal flaw: the need for lithium ion batteries. Over the last couple of years, Li-Ion batteries have been outlawed from checked-in luggage on most Australian airlines — due to their combustion risk — and both Virgin and Qantas now have policies that specifically restrict the use of smart luggage on flights.
