Robots that can see the future could be in our... future
TECHNICALLY CLAIRVOYANT.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have developed a learning technology called ‘visual foresight’ that will allow robots to predict the future of their actions to help them deal with situations they’ve never before encountered. The new technology uses a robot’s camera to build ‘learn prediction models’ without any human intervention (which has been essential so far) or any prior understanding of physics, like how to move objects across a crowded surface without causing any damage.
Since the information from these learning prediction models is collected autonomously via video (where earlier millions of clips had to be fed into the robot’s processing system for it to understand a task), experts believe its practical uses can be broad, like improving selfdriving car technology or manufacture better robotic home assistants.
