RETROBROWSER

- [ PAUL TAYLOR ]

TURN BACK TIME BIT BY BIT. Free | tinyurl.com/tla73-retro

Dubbing itself the time machine of the web, RetroBrowser displays websites like they did in ye olde times — you know, from the year 2000 to now. It’s similar in practice to the Wayback Machine, the web service that scrapes data from old caches. Plug in the date you want RetroBrowser to go back to, enter your URL and you’re away. RetroBrowser also suggests pages that were popular that day, though we’re a little unsure how it decides that as it brings up a few suspicious URLs we’ve never previously heard of. There are only a few restrictions when using the app. Forms aren’t live (so no Google searches from the old homepage) and you can’t (well, shouldn’t) use the old browser to enter login details. If the date you enter can’t be tracked down, RetroBrowser reaches out for a date from which it can grab a website, which is a little frustrating. Forgive the poor mobile formatting and it’s a handy if imperfect tool.
