LIMITATION CAN GO a long way in inspiring creativity, and when it’s applied to photography, the most immediate and obvious parameter constraint is to shoot in monochrome. Lenka is an app that thrives on simplicity, with only a handful of settings for when you’re taking your shot, and even fewer when editing. The interface while shooting includes a slider that adjusts the tint from cool to warm and one to alter the contrast, an autofocus toggle, an illumination toggle, and the ability to change the format from your phone’s regular aspect ratio to a square. The illumination doesn’t quite work in the way you’d expect; instead, it uses your smartphone’s integrated flash to light up the scene as soon as the setting is on, rather than when the shutter button is pressed, giving you the ability to preview the shot as it will appear. After you’ve taken your snap, you can crop and rotate your shot and that’s about it, but thankfully, there’s a button that allows you to continue your editing in the Instagram app.
