WHAT IS RANSOMWARE AGAIN?

-

Ransomware is software that does something bad to your computer, then asks you for money to ‘fix’ it. Sometimes, it’s just scareware — it doesn’t actually do anything, just tells you that your computer needs fixing.

More commonly now, however, it’s real. Real crypto ransomware will typically encrypt files on your PC — most likely your documents directory — and ask you for money for the decryption key. A different type of ransomware, lockscreen ransomware, will lock your PC’s start screen as ask for money to let you use the PC again.
