THE ESCAPISTS 2

A PRISON ESCAPE SIMULATOR, WHICH IS AS CHALLENGING AS YOU’D EXPECT $29.95 | PC, PS4, XO, Switch | www.team17.com

- [ SHAUN PRESCOTT ]

A sequel to the 2012 pixel art prison escape sim,

The Escapists 2 isn’t so much a sequel as it is a series of both minor and major improvements. While the game has a thorough tutorial, your first impression is likely to be one of confusion: this is a true sandbox game, allowing the player to use all the tools and situations at their disposal in order to break free. This usually requires a keen eye for detail and a familiarity with the routine of any of the game’s number of prison scenarios: or, if you’re lucky, it could just mean finding a mean crack in a wall and digging yourself out with a spoon. While the cheerful, colourful pixel aesthetic might suggest this is one for the more casual player, don’t let that fool you — this game is both time consuming and difficult, but it’s one that rewards investment and careful play. Now released for Nintendo Switch, it’s a great game to chip away at during downtime or on a commute.
