DIGESTIBLE VISUAL ESSAYS — THE PROOF OF THE PUDDING IS IN THE EATING. pudding.cool
The Pudding hopes to explore complex issues through visual essays. Whether a topic’s tricky because it’s, say, a subject of current debate or even a complicated scientific phenomenon, the custodians of this site conduct research and break it down into a universally communicable format. One of the site’s most popular articles, ‘The largest ever analysis of film dialogue by gender’, combed through 2,000 film screenplays in order to crunch some serious numbers on gender diversity (or, as it turns out, the lack thereof) in cinema. As you scroll through the body text of this article, the ever-present and interactive graphs and charts morph through a variety of forms and statistical focuses in order to paint the picture. Another (slightly less controversial) article aims to teach readers everything there is to know about the physics of waves and their relationship with sound. Once again, while reading through the piece, you’ll be presented with a graphical depiction — a sine wave, in this case — that you can interact with in ways denoted by the text, such as changing the amplitude and frequency of the wave and hearing the resulting sound it produces.
