Smartphone case roundup

WHETHER YOU PREFER A ONE-PIECE, A TWO-PIECE, SOMETHING MADE FROM LEATHER OR SILICONE, THERE’S A PHONE CASE JUST FOR YOU!

- [ PAUL TAYLOR, SHARMISTHA SARKAR, HARRY DOMANSKI & JOEL BURGESS ]

SO YOU’VE GONE and bought yourself a $1,100-plus handset, and you’re terrified of your iPhone, Pixel or Galaxy smashing to pieces or accidentally going for a swim. Or, horror scenario, plopping into the toilet. An understandable fear, as getting the thing fixed starts at three figures, and insurance isn’t much better. You’re probably also locked into a two-year contract, so it’s in your best interest to keep the phone in fine working order.

Those examples aside, you’re probably already settled on the idea of a phone case, and it’s true that a $5 cheapie from eBay will certainly protect it from scratches and bumps. However, opting for something better (and with a chunkier price tag) from a reputable vendor yields benefits. You’re more likely to have a warranty period on the case itself, so if it does degrade or fail, you’re covered. That cheap and cheerful number from eBay? Not so much... and they do degrade, as the TechLife office is littered with discarded, discoloured and grotty shells from phones in the past. Plus, you get the option of better materials, with one here being made out of hand-carved wood, and a good number with finely stitched leather.

We’ve rounded up a plethora of cases for the newest, biggestselling handsets. The majority of these cases are available for their bigger or smaller siblings, and also for the other handsets in this roundup. Our scores for those not tested for a specific handset will vary, though their sturdiness is transferable, and thematically look alike.
