Share files over iCloud

THE FEATURES APPLE has added to iCloud have been so numerous that many have arrived unnoticed. That’s a shame, as just a little time spent getting to know how to use them will reap rewards.

Take, for instance, the feature added in macOS Sierra that allows you to specify that files stored in your Documents and Desktop folders are hosted in iCloud and only those you use most often are stored locally on your Mac (set it up in ‘System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options’). The others can be downloaded when you need them, but when you don’t, the storage space on your startup disk is freed up. This brings macOS closer to iOS, where iCloud Drive’s contents are stored on Apple’s servers until you need them.

There’s a raft of features in iCloud that enable you to collaborate on docs, including granting access rights to anyone or just contacts you specify, and setting permissions to allow other people to edit or just read files. Here’s how to use them...
