While there are travel apps aplenty, there aren’t many that provide information about a location when you’re at the spot, unless you’ve got a local guide or have done your research beforehand. If you haven’t managed either, WikiCompass will do the needful. The app puts the power of Wikipedia’s vast library of information into a map so you can learn more about where you are in real time. The app uses a GPS signal to find hotspots around you, then pulls up Wiki articles — if any are available — relating to each location, letting you view them in AR. You will need a constant internet connection. To get the info you want, just launch the app, then tap on any location marker from the multitude of hotspots the app picks up. Your selection will reveal an image of the place, its name and distance from you, along with two icons: the ‘W’ will launch the related Wikipedia page, while the hexagon takes you into the app’s AR view. There isn’t much in the way of settings, other than clearing search histories and lowering search distance. This distance starts at the maximum of 10km but can be shrunk to half a kilometre if you’re looking for something specific.
