Microsoft teases its Xbox future

PROJECTS ‘SCARLETT’ AND ‘SCARLET CLOUD’ ARE THE COMPANY’S NEW GAMING ENDEAVOURS.

-

WHILE WE’RE SURE ‘Scarlet’ and ‘Scarlett Cloud’ won’t be the names plastered across the boxes when they appear on the shelves, it’s the best we’ve currently got (just like Scorpio before it). Despite the fact that the Xbox One X is still fairly new, it appears that Microsoft is already making plans for its future, although we have yet to see any substantial official announcements made.

By all accounts, Project Scarlett is the codename for the next console. In fact, at this year’s E3, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer hinted that the company was working on more than one: “Our hardware team is deep into developing the next generation of Xbox consoles”. When this new hardware is set to land, however, is anyone’s guess, so we’ll predict 2020 to match with the rumours of the PS5. The Scarlett Cloud — potentially the second console that Spencer was referring to and perhaps being released at the same time — could be a game streaming device and subscription service. This lightweight system would rely on an external gaming unit to provide the processing and graphical power (rather than housing such tech itself), allowing the user to stream games directly to the TV.
