Students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute are working on an underwater terminator drone that has been built to hunt down an invasive species of lionfish along Florida’s Atlantic coast and exterminate it. Generally speaking, treating the underlying ecological cause of the expansion of an invasive aquatic species is a better long-term solution, but a submarine that can autonomously locate and identify a target fish species is an innovative piece of technology. While this project is still in its early days, it could have broader (less morbid) applications for aquatic ecology.
