PO­TEN­TIAL FINE IF YOU REFUSE TO HAND OVER DE­VICE PASS­WORDS WHEN EN­TER­ING NEW ZEALAND New Zealand has now en­acted its Cus­toms and Ex­cise act 2018, which means that any­one re­fus­ing to hand over their phone or lap­top pass­word when en­ter­ing the coun­try can be fined NZ$5,000. Just to pour salt in the wound, cus­toms of­fi­cers will still con­fis­cate your de­vices to be foren­si­cally searched if you refuse to hand over pass­words, ef­fec­tively leav­ing those tar­geted with no way to chal­lenge the ‘re­quest’.
