POTENTIAL FINE IF YOU REFUSE TO HAND OVER DEVICE PASSWORDS WHEN ENTERING NEW ZEALAND New Zealand has now enacted its Customs and Excise act 2018, which means that anyone refusing to hand over their phone or laptop password when entering the country can be fined NZ$5,000. Just to pour salt in the wound, customs officers will still confiscate your devices to be forensical­ly searched if you refuse to hand over passwords, effectivel­y leaving those targeted with no way to challenge the ‘request’.
