Facebook has flagged that it plans to employ over 20,000 people by the end of 2018 as News Feed integrity data specialists to help combat the propagation of factually incorrect articles on its site. Whilst this is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, MIT and Qatar’s Computing Research Institute believe that AI might be more cost effective when it comes to stemming fake news. Instead of checking facts the algorithm searches for linguistic cues used to inflate dubious or incorrect claims and identifies suspect sources after 150 articles.
