IT’S NOT HARD to find the TP-Link Archer VR400 under $150, but with a little shopping around it’s possible to find a bit cheaper. The feature packed router uses the AC1200 spec, with three large adjustable antennas. Round the back it has four Gigabit LAN ports – one of which can double as a WAN connection for FTTP NBN. The VR400 can also connect to an ADSL connection, as well as VDSL, so makes for a versatile upgrade. The router gave excellent range and throughput during testing – especially on the 5GHz frequency, which uses beamforming. The interface and setup process is also excellent, and there is an Android and iOS app that makes setting up and managing your router even easier.

For those who want to ad a bit more value to their networks, the VR400 has a USB port that can handle a 3G modem, run a printer or add external storage. The router can also run a guest network, or restrict access with parental controls.
