Rishab Jain, a 13-year-old from Ore­gon has won the an­nual Dis­cov­ery Ed­u­ca­tion 3M Young Sci­en­tist Chal­lenge in the US for a ma­chine learn­ing al­go­rithm that tracks pan­cre­atic can­cer to de­liver bet­ter treat­ment. The pan­creas is a par­tic­u­larly dif­fi­cult to lo­cate as it is of­ten ob­scured by other or­gans, but the young teen (with the help of a men­tor) was able to pro­duce a soft­ware that im­proves pan­creas iden­ti­fi­ca­tion in an MRI al­low­ing for more pre­cise ra­dio­ther­apy treat­ment.
