Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App

JUST GOOD, NOT BAD OR UGLY. Free | www.rockstargames.com

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 is a rarity – a single-player game that actually benefits from a companion app. The app takes some of the elements from the game – most importantly, its sprawling, enormous map – and puts it onto your phone, so that you can navigate the land in-game without needing to pause and check your map constantly. Admittedly, having GPS pulls you out of the game’s devotion to its 1899 setting a bit, but it’s hard to say no to that convenience. It even updates in real time as you’re playing, so you can see the little dot representing Arthur move on the map as you play. You can also read Arthur’s in-game journal, check your progress, and read the game manual through the app. The option to purchase a digital strategy guide for $15 is also handy if you find yourself getting stuck out there in the wild west. This app isn’t going to fundamentally change the way you play, necessarily, but it takes a big, overwhelming game and makes it just a bit easier to handle.
