Historians use AI to identify Civil War veterans

Free | www.civilwarphotosleuth.com American Civil War enthusiast and computer scientist Kurt Luther teamed up with a historian, a historical magazine editor, and a some student researchers from Virginia Tech to create a website where you can find catalogued images of veterans using AI. The machine learning algorithm maps 27 facial data points onto it’s digitised catalogue of historical photos and will suggest likely matches of these for a supplied reference image. The team hope this will help to identify thousands of veterans in the multitude of non-annotated historical images from the period.
