First, the elephant in the room – yes, ‘snewpit’ is an awful name, and if you’re trying to tell people about this app you’ll definitely have to clarify that it’s not spelled ‘snoopit’. I suppose they wanted the word ‘new’ in there. Once you’re past that, though, Snewpit is an interesting, although potentially problematic, app. The idea is that users can submit local news stories, along with photos, videos, and short blurbs, to keep each other informed. There are obvious advantages here, especially if your local news isn’t as on the ball as it could be – being able to find out why that road is closed off, or share the details of a missing person easily, has obvious advantages. But these bite-sized pieces of user-submitted news, and the idea of peer-to-peer news in general, feels like another way of asking the general public to perform unregulated labour that is generally best left to paid professionals. It’s an interesting app, as long as you don’t rely on it for all your news going forward.
