Why can’t I log in to my macOS user account?

We’ve all been there: you enter the password for your regular user account into the welcome screen, and it wobbles in disapproval. Make sure of the password and type it carefully. Check for an up arrow, indicating that you need to take Caps Lock off. Still can’t get in?
