Why has my Mac stopped talking to my Bluetooth accessory?

Ctrl-click the accessory in System Preferences > Bluetooth, click the cross to remove it, then pair it again. If Bluetooth dies altogether, indicated by its menu bar icon turning into a grey zigzag line, try a restart; hold Shift-Opt while clicking the icon to get a Debug menu with a reset option.
