A PSOne darling, Final Fantasy Tactics is beloved by many and still renowned as one of the best Japanese turn-based strategy games of all time. With a wonderful story, complex and deep battle system, and beautiful graphics that have aged remarkably well, it has been crying out for a modern reenactment.

In many ways, War of The Visions is that re-enactment – it features a wonderful story, a strong and deep battle system, great cutscenes, graphics, and music

– but unfortunately finds itself a story of two halves. In one, this game is a wonderful example of how to build a great strategy title on mobile, especially in its single player modes.

The story content is separate from the side events, missions and quests, and by completing it you gain new modes, heroes, equipment and other content.

For the first single player-heavy elements, it’s very fun and easily the best FF- related game on mobile to date.

The second half is the trap that most ambitious mobile games fall into, which is once you investigate the post-story and side challenges. The game is thirsty for your cash and thus features a staggeringly long and deep grind in order to level your characters and complete the non-story content.

Summoning characters and XP items cost real (big) money or take hours of mushing through daily and repeat missions. It’s a massive shame because there has been a lot of effort put into the core gameplay and story elements of this game, and it’s exciting to think of expansions and new plot lines to play through.

My score represents the core story loop, nothing more.

This game is a wonderful example of how to build a great strategy title on mobile, especially in its single player modes.
