LOW STORAGE SPACE

-

I KEEP GETTING A MESSAGE SAYING THAT MY MAC STARTUP DISK IS ALMOST FULL. HOW CAN I FREE UP SPACE? There’s a facility built–in to macOS to help with this that has easy steps you can work through to help you free up disk space. Below, we’ll show you where to find it and how to use it.

1 Storage overview

Click on the Apple icon to the left of your Mac’s menu bar, then select the “About This Mac” option from the menu. When the window appears, click on the “Storage” tab at the top.

2 Manage storage

You’ll now see an overview of your Mac’s storage and how it’s used. Click on the “Manage” button in the top-right corner of the window to view the ways in which you can save space.

3 Store in iCloud

If you have lots of iCloud space, you can click the “Store in iCloud” button to stash files, photos and messages in your iCloud and not on your Mac when storage space is low.

4 Empty the bin

Some people forget to empty their Mac’s Bin for months. Turn on the “Empty Bin Automatically” option to erase items that have been in there for more than 30 days.

5 Reduce clutter

Finally, click on the “Review Files” button in the “Reduce Clutter” section and a browser will appear in which you can sort through documents and permanently erase files that you no longer need.
