NO STARTUP DISK

-

WHEN I TRY TO START MY MAC IT JUST DISPLAYS A “?” FOLDER. WHY? It means that macOS can’t find the startup disk and therefore cannot boot up successfully. Fixing this problem involves putting your Mac into Recovery Mode and choosing the correct startup disk, which will be the Macintosh HD. Here’s a walkthrough on how to remedy the problem.

SELECT STARTUP DISK On the menu of items, click on the Apple menu, pick “Startup Disk,” then select your Macintosh HD and click “Restart.”

REINSTALL MACOS

If there are serious issues with the OS, reinstalling it may solve the issue. Click on “Reinstall macOS” to get started.

BROWSE SAFARI You can also launch Safari while in Recovery Mode to browse the Apple Support pages to get some assistance.

RESTORE YOUR MAC

If you have a

Time Machine backup of the HD, pick “Restore from Time Machine” and restore from the latest backup.

DISK UTILITY This lets you launch the Disk Utility app to repair or erase a disk. If the repair is successful, select the disk in Startup Disk and restart.

REBOOT IN RECOVERY

Hold down the power button to shut down, then press again to reboot while holding Cmd-R until you see the Apple logo.
