Create shareable videos
New features and an interface overhaul have made Clips even easier to use
Clips 3.0 is the latest version of Apple’s video editing tool for social media. If you love posting Instagram stories, or uploading video clips to TikTok, SnapChat or Twitter, it’s designed for you. And if you haven’t yet given it a try, now is the perfect time. Clips 3.0 is free to download and great fun, and if you follow our guide here you’ll be posting videos in no time.
The most significant new feature of Clips 3.0 is that it now enables you to create videos in landscape mode on iPad and vertical mode on iPhone, instead of just square. You will find that Clips defaults to 16:9 vertical on iPhone and 4:3 landscape if iPad.
Also new in version 3.0 is support for Scribble using Apple Pencil on iPad and for keyboard input, as well as mouse and trackpad control. Apple is hoping this will make it easier to use Clips in an educational setting.
There are a bunch of new soundtracks (making over 100 in total), stickers, and filters, and the interface has been overhauled to make Clips even easier to use. For example, the record screen now floats on top of the main window and swiping up on Effects shows a full-height card that displays the available stickers and effects. Selfie scenes have also been updated to take advantage of the iPhone’s True Depth camera.
If you have an iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro, Clips 3.0 enables you to record in HDR and share the result as a Dolby Vision
HDR file.
