First neuron-scale human brain model built

-

Google AI, in conjunction with the Lichtman Laboratory at Harvard, has released a 1.4 petabyte (1000 Terabyte) render of a piece of human brain tissue and a companion paper explaining it. Despite the fact that the model maps only about a cubic millimetre of cerebral cortex tissue, the 4nm rendering contains 130 million synapses (the joining component of neurons) that were mapped using electron microscopy. While there’s obviously still a long way to go to map the whole brain, this is the first to-scale model of the human brain at a cellular level that we have.
