A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation documented the successful test of a brain implant that allowed a person who had been completely blind for 16 years to detect shapes and even make out some letters. The apparatus uses a retina-like camera mounted on a pair of glasses to transmit light information to an array with 96 electrodes that is implanted in the occipital cortex of the patient’s brain.
