Secret Story

Tara, 44, couldn’t work out why her hubby wasn’t losing weight

-

Icarefully watched the scales as my husband Joe stood on them. ‘How have you put on more weight?’ I demanded. ‘We’ve only been eating chicken and vegies!’

‘I must just be one of those people who can’t lose weight,’ he muttered.

Sighing, I went to start prepping our kale and grapefruit salad.

Joe and I had been on a serious health kick for a few months now, and while I’d lost 10 kilos, my hubby’s gut just wasn’t budging.

It was so frustrating.

But what concerned me even more were his weekly disappearances.

Almost every Sunday, he’d head out for a few hours, using walking our dog Bertie as an excuse.

I was growing suspicious, especially as he would always wait until I got in the bath before he left.

I was terrified Joe was having an affair.

The following Sunday, I decided to do my own detective work.

‘Right, time for a bath,’ I announced.

Shutting the bathroom door, I ran the water but stayed dressed. Five minutes later, Joe was off.

‘Going to take Bertie, back soon!’ he yelled.

Hearing the front door shut, I quickly leapt up and ran out of the house. I had to find out where Joe was really going.

To keep myself hidden, I pulled my jacket’s hood up and walked on the opposite end of the road to Joe.

I soon found myself down a lane where Joe’s friend Danny lived.

I was also friends with his wife Carol – why would he go there without me?

He knocked on the door. Opposite Danny’s house was a parked car, so I sat crouched behind it.

It felt crazy to be spying on my own hubby, but my gut told me something was up.

About 15 minutes later, a pizza delivery guy whizzed up to the house with five huge boxes.

Danny and Carol only had two small children – why so many pizzas? Then Joe appeared. ‘Thanks mate, I’m starving!’ I heard him say.

He didn’t have a secret mistress – he was just using our friends’ house to hide out and binge on junk food!

Twenty minutes passed by before Joe walked out of the house with Bertie, bidding Danny goodbye and clutching a pizza box.

I watched in horror as my hubby gorged on the remaining few slices.

So that’s why he wasn’t losing weight!

While I slaved away making us delicious healthy dinners, Joe was sneaking out for a feast of junk food.

After I got back home, I called my friend Denise, sobbing.

‘I understand why you’re upset, but you’ve been way too tough on Joe with this diet,’ she gently told me.

‘You might enjoy the green juices and healthy meals, but it’s not for everyone.’

Processing what Denise said, I realised I had gone a bit over the top and he probably just didn’t want to hurt my feelings.

‘You’re right,’ I sighed, ‘I have got carried away.’

From then, I still ate healthily but let the odd treat slip through now and again.

‘Let’s get fish and chips!’ I announced to a bemused Joe the following evening.

As he hungrily ate our greasy feast, I decided to keep my discovery from Joe.

He could keep his secret about his second family down the road!
