Living Well

-

Being constantly bombarded with information about tragic world events and frightening natural disasters can make you feel anxious and on edge. Here are a few tips to help deal with the gloom…

PRACTISE MINDFULNESS

Take time out to focus on your immediate environment – and take your mind off events outside your control. Meditation is one form of mindfulness, but you could also focus on cooking dinner, playing chess, doing a crossword or reading a book.

TURN OFF

Smartphones, social media and television are great ways to connect with the outside world, but when that world is a source of stress and anxiety, it helps to disconnect. Put your phone and other devices away, switch off the television and take a break.

RECLAIM BEDTIME

If the last thing you do before going to sleep is read a negative article on social media, you’re more likely to experience an unsettled night’s sleep. Establish a soothing bedtime routine involving a shower or a warm bath with lavender oil, a mug of warm milk, and relaxing chill-out music.

FIND BALANCE

Vary the information you’re consuming. Along with the daily world news, try subscribing to newsletters and blogs about your interests, such as gardening, book clubs, cooking or travel. Also seek out positive news on websites like goodnewsnetwork.org.

BE PROACTIVE

If the world is getting you down, do something to spread happiness and positivity.

Start by extending kindness and a helping hand to family, friends and neighbours. Volunteering with charities and community organisations is another great way to feel more positive about the future.
