Spooky Story

- Pauline Allan, 49, Avalon Beach, NSW

It’s lovely here,’ my younger sister Suzanne smiled. ‘Yes, just gorgeous,’ I agreed.

In our twenties, we were on a beach holiday together.

As we settled into our shared dorm room in a hostel, another girl around our age came in.

When she pulled out a little doll from her backpack, curiosity got the better of me. ‘What’s that?’ I asked. ‘A voodoo doll,’ she replied. ‘I’m a witch.’ ‘A witch?’ I said, intrigued. ‘Yes, I perform spells,’ she explained. ‘Usually ones for good.’

‘Oh okay...’ I said, not really taking her seriously.

Suzanne and I went out to look around and when we returned, the girl’s mood had clearly soured.

Now she sat there, angrily mumbling some words I couldn’t catch.

‘What’s wrong?’ Suzanne asked warily.

‘My boyfriend dumped me!’ she spat, furiously sticking a pin into the voodoo doll.

‘Well, he’ll regret it,’ she said, explaining she was casting a spell.

As she worked, another young backpacker arrived and took in the incantations.

‘She’s weird, isn’t she?’ he whispered to us.

A voodoo doll left Pauline terrified She hadn’t realised her evil spell would backfire so spectacularly

‘A bit,’ I agreed.

So the three of us ventured out again and left the ‘witch’ to her ramblings.

When we got back after dinner, the witch had turned in for the night and was snoring away.

So the young guy, Adam, went to his bed and Suzanne and I got into the double bed we were sharing.

About 4am, I was suddenly jolted awake.

Terrifyingly, I felt an immense presence of evil all around me.

Opening my eyes, I was horrified to see a dense black fog over our bed.

Suddenly, it seemed to lunge at Suzanne.

‘Get away!’ I yelled out, and began screaming my head off.

Suzanne woke up and began screaming as well.

Of course we woke up Adam and the witch who both started screaming too.

Flicking on the light, we all stared at each other.

‘There’s something evil in this room!’ cried Adam. ‘Did you see the ghost?’ Suzanne asked.

‘I did!’ I sobbed.

‘I thought it was going to kill you – it was so evil and black!’

She looked back at me in surprise.

‘I didn’t see that – I saw a bright intense light right over the bed.’

‘What?’ I said. ‘That’s bizarre!’

We all looked at the witch, but she looked as shocked as we did.

Clearly she hadn’t realised her evil spell would backfire so spectacularly.

Huddled together in bed, Suzanne and I lay awake with the light on for the rest of the night.

Leaving the room at daybreak, we were relieved to find the witch had gone.

Our only explanation is that she conjured up evil in the room with her voodoo doll and spells but instead of it being directed towards her ex as she’d intended, it honed in on my sister.

‘Maybe the light spirit you saw came to protect us when I screamed,’ I said.

We didn’t have any other explanation.

I just hope that girl learnt her lesson – be careful what you witch for.
