1 Birthday candles

We’re all familiar with this one! But you have to wait until your birthday, of course. Then, as you blow out the candles on your cake, make a wish. If you get them all out in one go your wish will come true.

2 Wishbone

This one is an old classic, although not so good for vegetarians. The wishbone of the chicken is set aside to dry, then two people hold one side each with their pinkies, make a silent wish and pull until it snaps. Whoever is left holding the piece with the top attached gets their wish.

3 White horses

This one has a catch! You can make a wish when you see a white horse – but you have to be quick because the wish must be made before you see its tail or your wish won’t come true!

4 Rainbows

The coloured arch is a sign of good luck! When you see one, make a wish, close your eyes and count slowly to 30. If the rainbow is still there when you open your eyes, your wish will come true!

5 Mango seeds

Always make a wish on the seed of the first mango you eat of the season. Mangoes originated in India and are considered a sacred fruit and that mango trees can grant wishes.

6 Wishing well

Providing it’s not dry, any well can become a wishing well. This comes from the ancient European belief that water housed deities or is there as a gift from God. The coin you throw in is meant to seal the deal!

7 Eyelashes

If you lose an eyelash, place it on the back of your hand. Close your eyes, make a wish and blow gently. If the eyelash is gone when you open your eyes, wish granted!

8 A star

Some say you can only wish on the first star out at night, some say the Northern star only, some say shooting stars only and some say any star at all will do! I tend to go with the first, based on the rhyme:

‘Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, Wish I may, wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.’

9 Dandelion

Another classic! Pick a fluffy white dandelion. Close your eyes, make a wish and blow the seeds. If they all disappear first go, you will have your wish.

10 Falling leaves

If you see a leaf falling from a tree, make a wish on it. Then make sure you pick up the leaf and keep it – your wish will only come true if you know where the leaf is!

11 Feathers

If you find a feather outside, stick it in the ground and walk around it in a circle while making a wish. If the feather stays standing, your wish will come true.
