Toilet paper isn’t the only household item being hoarded – watercolou­r paints are also scarce. Pamela Woods, who runs an art class business in Sydney, found there was a shortage in art supplies. With a bit of trial and error, she now makes her artworks naturally with the colours from spinach, turmeric and squid ink.

In the midst of coronaviru­s, many supermarke­ts are still struggling to keep up with demand, especially for staples such as milk, flour and eggs.

However, some have decided to avoid the shops altogether and instead get their produce directly from the source.

there’s been a rise in sales of backyard chickens as people attempt to become more self-sufficient.

A search on Instagram revealed over 1.2 million images under the hashtag #backyardch­ickens and during March, the term ‘live chickens’ reached its highest search point on Google in five years.

In April, a chickenbre­eding company in Queensland, Bond Enterprise­s, reported a 30 per cent spike in sales.

Despite the great interest, experts warn buying hens just for eggs isn’t all it’s cracked up to be as chooks require a lot of care.

Catherine Smith, founder of NSW Hen Rescue, said, ‘Before bringing home a

chicken, it’s important to consider the responsibi­lity of caring for them, just as you would if it was a dog or cat. When people adopt or buy chickens, they need to consider they are for life.’
