The 975-metre El Capitan in Yosemite National Park is a notoriousl­y difficult cliff face that can take most seasoned ‘free climbers’ four to six days to ascend. Free climbers use a rope just for safety, not for progress. Emily Harrington, 34, recently took on the ascent and, in 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds, she became the first woman to complete the tough Golden Gate route in under a day. ‘It was incredibly quiet. All the stars were out. It was just this really serene, peaceful experience,’ Emily told CNN.
