WILL MY SHOULDER DISLOCATE AGAIN?

- With Dr Dawn Harper

QWhen I was a child, I dislocated my shoulder. I’d forgotten all about it until I slipped by the pool on holiday a while ago and it happened again. I had scans at the time, but now I’m nervous about that arm in case it dislocates again. I’m 27. Is it likely to dislocate again now that it has gone out twice?

ARecurrent dislocations are more common in people under 25 and those over 40. You may have stretched the ligaments surrounding the joint, so it is important you see a physiotherapist, who will advise on strengthening exercises to help the joint recover. I would also recommend doing these regularly.
